The evergreen forests of Kerala never fail to
inspire and excite travellers from far- off lands. These
forests are situated in the long line of mountains called
the Western ghats that run parallel to the western coastline.
The Western Ghats is home to some of the world's
most exotic tropical wildlife such the majestic Asiatic
elephant, bison, deer, tiger, leopard etc. There are many
wildlife reserves such as Periyar Tiger Reserve(Thekkady),
Eravikulam National Park (Munnar), and Chinnar Wildlife
Sanctury (Marayoor) situated in the High Ranges where
one can observe many of these animals. For the Bird-watchers,
there is the Thattekkad Bird Sanctury located en route
to Munnar. This sanctury boasts of more than 200
species of exotic birds such as the Malabar Grey Horn
Bill, Rose Winged Parakeets and the Ceylon Frog mouth.
Up north, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctury and the Silent
Valley National Park are reserves rich in biodiversity.
The Silent Valley Park is so known for the total absence
of the chattering cicadas. |
